Goblins (& Pixies) to Your Mounts

Let the Jousting Begin 

So, the goblins (Nath) won 3-1 and won extra spikes as a trophy. The pixies (me) were robbed!

The two jousting teams are a real mix of manufacturers with Oakbound pixie team coming out tops. I struggled to find enough minis to make two convincing teams. So, in the end I used Oakbound (very pleased with the look of the pixie team), Ral Partha Europe, Bad Squiddo, Warbases, classic Citadel and Wargames Atlantic. I would like to improve the goblin team but that can come later once we have played a few games.

And I have an idea for a Halloween themed team.

So, one game in on Wartnose Goblin Jousting, it was a lot of fun. The rules were easy to pick up but had enough quirks from other rules to make them different from other games. And the randomised movement templates actually fitted the game very well.

Once we had read the rules correctly, combat sped up nicely (we didn’t read the rules on double and triples right on the first read through). The only question point we had about the rules was if the Dirty Tricks rules were dirty enough. We wanted an occasional more dramatic effect such as unseating a rider. But that could be just us!

Badger, Fox & Giant Stag Beetle

After looking around various minis (painted & unpainted), I realised that the badger pixie riders (from Oakbound) would make the perfect team*. Ok so technically not goblins but close enough and make an interesting looking team. As I wanted to make each rider different, I found some different steeds from the bits box (Warbases & Ral Partha Europe). So, voila a Wartnose  jousting team. Now, I need find some actual goblins for them to go up against... 

Point to Note - Now I did realise that I bought the 50mm bases (should have been 60mm) but I don't think that will stop the fun. 

*And two are already painted! Plus was a great opportunity to use this colour shift paint on the stag beetle.

Itzcoatl's Raiding Party

 The Compulsory Element

Not for the last time Itzcoatl wished he was back on his favourite lily pad contemplating the mysteries of the cosmos with the occasional tasty snack. However, his master had instructed him to collect another mysterious ancient artifact. This time near the occasionally hostile northern lizardman tribes. So, he had decided to bring plenty of  support and had even paid for a personal Amazon bodyguard from his own gold stash. 

Lyta surveyed the valley below and at the steam rising from the holes in the far valley wall. Obviously some lizardmen nests. She quietly observed to herself, it was unlikely they would pass unnoticed as she unconsciously shifted her straps holding her twin blades. 

While the first part of the Slann army is still some way off, but I thought perhaps I could play some small narrative games using what I have already painted up. So, Itzcoatl's raiding party was born. 

I have finished of the last of the Ral Partha Europe frogmen, now several of them have opted to look after some of Tanqecl-Tlo'ectlutl's many pets. So, I have had to draft in a couple of replacements in the form of a Diehard Amazon and a 'mini' giant spider to build a unit of ten. 

Obviously Itzcoatl believes the local conscripts need a seasoned mercenary to keep an eye on them! 

Army Building

Warhammer 3rd Edition army lists are bit of a mixed bag when it comes to compulsory elements. For the Slann it is only one unit of ten regular models at 9 points each. Making the minimum requirements only 100 points. Where as an army list like the dwarves has over 600 points and sixty models as a minimum requirement for rank and file. Still this does leave plenty of points for all of those Slann special units.

Very Early Elf

Ral Partha CS1 Wood Elf with Bow

The minis are getting older! This one is a Ral Partha wood elf who looks smart enough to join the high elves. Originally sculpted by Tom Meier some time in the early nineteen eighties. I reckon I had one of these  back in the eighties but I think it came in a Citadel pack. But then Citadel did produce some Ral Partha minis under license. 

The detail is excellent for a forty year old mini, proving Tom Meier's talent as a sculptor.

Ok - So I have a Bit More to do on the Base But let's Not talk About That!

I am calling this one done, I want to add a bit more to the base once the first layer has dried but basically the painting is done. Given this mini has been in production for forty odd years it still holds up remarkably well. Tom Meier doesn't get talked about as much as some of the Citadel sculptors but he was knocking out like this one, years before the good people of Nottingham. 

I was thinking some of the detailing around the feet was a bit soft but honestly I am now thinking that the standard has just moved on and I am over thinking this one.

The Giant Lumbers On

Finally some Painting

Now  much time for painting lately but did manage to get some more paint on the giant. He is starting to look more human (giantish) after some lighter flesh tones. I decided to get the beard and hair done before any more flesh tones. To see how he looks and if the colours work together. 

I haven't decided which army he naturally aligns with because, I thought he looked quite like a friendly forest giant until I noticed his tusks. So he may be joining the forces of evil...

Five Colours  finished on the Flesh Tones

Finally got round to starting the Ral Partha cloud giant. And now five colours in (Bugmans glow > Reikland flesh tone > Bugmans glow > Bugmans glow/death claw brown mix > death claw brown) on the skin tones and at least another three to go. And probably at least one more wash. He looks browner in the photo than on the painting table. But as I use more ‘flesh’ tones he should get a bit pinker. There is lots of great detail on muscles making them easier to paint.

One More Ticked Off the Oldhammer Bucket List

My Ral Partha Cloud giant arrived today from Ral Partha Legacy (via Miniature Heroes ). He has been on my Oldhammer list from the start and I didn't even realise he was still in production. Until I came across the RPL site. 

Now I just need to work out how I want to paint him...

Oakbound Pixie riding a Giant Stag Beetle

A Post that Does Exactly What it says on the Tin

Spent a nice relaxing session this afternoon, painting up a Oakbound Pixie rider riding a giant stag beetle. The giant stag beetle comes from Ral Partha Europe. The Pixie riders come with badgers from Oakbound but I thought they would look would look good on some alternative mounts. So, last time I ordered from RPE, I added the stag beetles. It has taken a while to paint the second one up, hopefully the third one will be a little quicker!

Army on Parade - Moria Goblins

Side Project Done

With the bat swarm completed, this side project is done, With exception  of the bat swarm (which was from Ral Partha Europe for £5) all of the extras came out of the pile of plastic. So, the whole project only costed me a £5. 

And with the bat swarm excluded could I use this army in a GW store? All of the minis are Citadel and clearly identifiable based on the descriptions in the rulebook... All be it done by Cheapside Industries a.k.a.  me. So, not the 'official' minis for the specialist units like the Black Shields. But Citadel minis all the same. 

Once I started rebasing the heroes it was inevitable that I would end up rebasing all of the goblins. The troll was a bit too obvious to escape a repaint. 

The extra couple of Black Shields which takes 

the warband up to seven plus a captain. 

 

The war drum was quickly made out of green stuff

 as were the bone drum sticks.

Izcoatl - Blesser of Water

 Level 5 Slann Wizard (Updated)

This is the tech mage  Phrogg from Ral Partha Europe. Who fits very well as a low level wizard for my 3rd Ed. WFB Slann army. I have decided to ditch  the level 5 hero as the leader of human slaves and replace him with the wizard. I am not sure if that is a good idea in terms of gameplay but he looks good.

I have been cutting up some of the aquarium plants to make them a bit smaller and more suitable for 25mm bases. I was originally going to paint them. But I rather liked the translucent pink leaves.

The Frogmen of Barrowmaze (from Ral Partha Europe) turned up and went straight to the front of the painting queue.  This allows me to complete the first unit for the Slann army. 

I am pretty pleased how he turned out and fits in well with the giant spiders. 

Had to use my Kindle tonight as the PC is broken. So hopefully the pictures are ok.
