Badger, Fox & Giant Stag Beetle

The First Wartnose Goblin Jousting Team

First two jousters - To be named

After looking around various minis (painted & unpainted), I realised that the badger pixie riders (from Oakbound) would make the perfect team*. Ok so technically not goblins but close enough and make an interesting looking team. As I wanted to make each rider different, I found some different steeds from the bits box (Warbases & Ral Partha Europe). So, voila a Wartnose  jousting team. Now, I need find some actual goblins for them to go up against...

Point to Note - Now I did realise that I bought the 50mm bases (should have been 60mm) but I don't think that will stop the fun.

*And two are already painted! Plus was a great opportunity to use this colour shift paint on the stag beetle.

Oakbound Pixie riding a Giant Stag Beetle

A Post that Does Exactly What it says on the Tin

Spent a nice relaxing session this afternoon, painting up a Oakbound Pixie rider riding a giant stag beetle. The giant stag beetle comes from Ral Partha Europe. The Pixie riders come with badgers from Oakbound but I thought they would look would look good on some alternative mounts. So, last time I ordered from RPE, I added the stag beetles. It has taken a while to paint the second one up, hopefully the third one will be a little quicker!

Back to the Paint Bench

Starting the Leprechauns and Other Stuff

Just returned from my holidays which was very relaxing but didn't offer much opportunity for wargaming stuff except to catch up on some YouTube videos and blogs. However, I did come back with a plan which is to paint up the Leprechaun warband from Oakbound plus Boris the Dunce. Boris is needed stop the warband totalling 13 which doesn't feel right for the lucky leprechauns.

Anyway, first leprechaun painted in the traditional greens and yellows.  I am not sure if the other might have some different colours.

Once the leprechauns are finished I will move onto the wood elf cavalry and whilst on holiday I did manage to find these cocktail sticks which made me think wild elf lances. And even if they don't, I reckon they could come in handy for a Chaos warband.

A quick spirit to finish off the first elven animal hander which completes the first wood elf unit.

Magua - Huron War Chief & Entwife

Finishing Stuff on a Friday

Finished off both the figures I have been working on this week. First is: Magua - Huron war chief and chief antagonistic from Last of the Mohicans. This model is with his war paint and tomahawk ready for battle. Hunting for Colonel Munro and his daughters.

Second was the Entwife, which needed the base finishing off. After the leaf spiral around the dryad from last month, I decided to go for a similar effect as if she is summoning a whirlwind around herself.

'When the Grey Hair is dead, Magua will eat his heart. Before he dies, Magua will put his children under the knife, so the Grey Hair will know his seed is wiped out forever.'

“God gave him enough, and yet he wants all. Such are the pale-faces.”

Entwife of the Dreadwood

A Very Quick Finish

This Salute purchase only just got onto the paint queue today. As I was doing the next batch of airbrushing, and I decided to add her at the last minute which is why the base isn't even prepped. I usually do the airbrushing in batches to cut down on paint mixing and cleaning etc. This miniature is from Conquest miniatures and the mould is very crisp with very little flash (Unlike the Last of the Mohicans from Warlord games)

Anyway, she looked really great after even the zenithal highlight and I was tempted to stop after I put the contrast paint on the leaves.

Ok, so I did add a couple of washes and a bit of highlighting but she was done in about 45 minutes. Just the base left to finish. After doing the leaf storm on the last dryad, I have a couple of ideas.

The Entwife alongside a Grenadier barbarian shaman. As you can see she is about 80mm tall. So stands above the rank and file.  And she will join the ever growing army of the Fae Queen.

Death & the Fae

And Hell followed with him

This 1980s Death Elemental has a real Oldhammer vibe about him and he painted up very easily. He is the second of the special characters for the (ever increasing) zombie horde. Like the first one, he will be mounted on a 40mm base along with some other zombies so they can be ranked up properly. I must admit I did wince at the price when I pressed the 'Buy It Now' button on eBay. But compared to modern GW  figures he isn't any more expensive than modern figures its just that his original price was £1.25 (originally sold for £2.50 with the Life Elemental who is even more expensive nowadays!)

"And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts

And I looked and behold, a pale horse

And his name that sat on him was Death

And Hell followed with him"

The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash*

*I hope didn't have to tell you that!

Dryad

Now this is one of those genius or awful ideas. After (re)painting this Reaper Dryad with a fairly regular army standard paint job. I decided she needed something extra. So, I added a whirlwind of leaves around her. Quite simply a metal frame was bent around her with a paperclip and then I stuck a load of birch tree seeds as leaves onto the frame. Overall I am quite pleased with the effect. I did then dump plenty of PVA glue over the top of the leaves to cement them in place.

Just a Duck Hunt

 & Mark Two Fae Queen

After tidying up a section of river, I retook some pictures of the ducks in a more naturalistic setting. Sometimes a project is not finished until it is finished.

Ok, so I am calling the Fae Queen finished for now. Which sort of how I felt once I painted her for the first time. Like last time I can't quite put my finger on what I am not happy about the final look. Now, to be clear I think she looks much better after the repaint but...

Still, definitely looks more like the Dread queen I  had in mind when I was painting her. But this is one of those figures which will come under the Vexed category.

Work In Progress Wednesday

Trying to Finish Stuff

Work continues on the fae queen who edges towards completion.

But I did finish the second banner for the zombie. Hurrah! Just the second special leader model to bring this up to sixty. The Oldhammer Death Elemental has just arrived, so I can now start on this model.

And time for a new project. This one is a bit of a departure from my usual stuff and when I get onto the British and French regulars I will have to follow the 'proper' paint schemes.

Not Just Another Duck Hunt

Ok - Maybe Just a Duck Hunt

A quick and simple paint job to finish off these ducks from Warbases. Again some small prey for Paleo-Hunt.  The set comes with five ducks but I managed to lose one until finished painting the other four.

The ducks were painted based on Mallard ducks. Each stand painted as a male and a female.

Minotaurs Finished

Didn't take long to finish the final rank and file minotaur.

Morgana - The Dread Queen of the Fae

Work continues on the army commander for the Fae. This one has taken a bit of thinking time to work how to paint  to take advantage of the zenithal highlights.

Stabbed in the Back

 More Zombies Stumble forward

A better shot, showing the zombie stabbed with a spear. And a group shot of the next batch of six.

Caught in Moonlight

After a bit of debate, I decided to go for a zenithal highlight that mimics moonlight above and behind. Leaving the front in shadow. A much more dramatic look for the Fae queen.
