Minotaurs Better Late then Never

More Army Building

Look back a couple of years and the first army I built since restarting painting was a Malal chaos army. In this army I had unit of minotaurs. At the time I was using some ex-Grenadier  Hobgoblins as proxies (not pixies). As I really like the models and they have enough weight to act the part.  Anyway fast forward a couple of years and I picked up these minotaurs for £2 each at Salute. I now realise I am still one minotaur short and hopefully I won't have to wait another couple of years to complete the minotaur champion (I have a couple of figures in mind) But the rank and file are nearly done.

Nearly done with the third minotaur.

The original 'minotaur' unit for Malal's chaos army.

Bit of Madness Still Lingers

Making Milliput Bases & Other Stuff

So I have continued to make Milliput bases, although I have ordered some lipped ones after reading the comments on the last post. A couple of these bases still need a bit more tidying up. But they are the look I am going for...

First ten archers

The Centaur champion looked a bit bare so I added
some equipment including my first sculpted pouch.

Owl for the Leprechaun warband.

Pleased with the owl as he was taken out of the leftover bits bin and is just right for the Woods.

Started to use the scenic plants from
my bargain lot at Beachhead.

Chaos Beastmen Attack Village

A.K.A. The Wheel of Time - Episode One

Just watched the first episode of the new Wheel of Time TV series by Amazon. Without giving away too many spoilers there is an attack on a village by group of Trollocs (I can only assume they were going for an amalgamation of Troll and Orc but ended up with something far worse! or maybe the writer was just taking the piss). However, I haven't read the books so I don't know what the official description of Trolloc  in the books is but in the TV series they are real dead-ringers for Chaos beastmen from Warhammer.

I did try and find a picture of them from the show but couldn't so you will just have to watch it if you want to see what i am talking about.

Definitely NOT Trollocs!

Now I am not entirely sold on this series but if you want to see what chaos beastmen would look like attacking an isolated village then this is a pretty good place to start. Plus, the magic attacks were good as well.

Fantasy Warriors - The Post Lockdown Version

 I Played a Game!

I finally managed to get a game in and it was a game of Fantasy Warriors. It was really an opportunity to get all of my lockdown painting a table, have a catch up with some friends  and roll some dice.

We didn't worry too much about working out a balanced games as I wanted to get all of my lockdown painted figures on a table at once. So we had Fae and Halflings  (Derek & I) vs. Undead and Chaos (Steve & Jason). I had to write up some army lists for the Fae and the Chaos armies as they are not featured in Fantasy Warriors.

When we used to regularly play Fantasy Warriors we had started writing updates and potential rules changes for a v2.0 (As were all part of the Grenadier display team back in he 90s).  The main change on the day was using 2D6 instead of 1D6 for the amended  reaction tables. Using a single D6 means that any score is equally likely (1-6!) but using the total of 2D6 means that numbers around the middle (6-8) are much more likely than a 2 or 12. Meaning an extreme roll is possible on 2D6, however, most of the time a result inline with expectation occurs. So if you are doing well it is unlikely your guys are going to do something stupid. Also by keeping the modifiers from the rule book remain the same, they have a smaller influence on the overall outcome.

Whilst I remembered all of the figures , I did forget the counters (Fantasy Warrior's uses counters to indicate orders, reactions and ammo etc.) so we had to use our limited drawing skills.

Fantasy Warriors has a number of fun features which affect the course of the entire game. One of those is the time dial. The Fantasy Warriors uses of time of day in the game. The day is divided into 12 periods, six day and six night periods. The time of the battle can affect your force's morale and and shooting. It will probably be no surprise to find that armies like goblins and undead favour night whereas my halflings favour day.  So as a sign of things to come we managed to roll the first turn of night for the start of the battle.

Whilst looking for a picture of a time dial, I did come across a website where someone had made on Katie the Wargamer: September 2015

One Up & One Down

The spectral wolves of the Wilde Hunt crashed into Grateful Dead skeletons on the far flank. This turned out to  be the most balanced fight of the game. The first units to engage and still battling it out  at the end. Blue Maeve the Fae hero did help out in the first couple of turns but she was called by her queen to help defeat the Nurgle Battleleader Fester in the centre of the battlefield.

They Got Crushed

At the other end of the scale was the halfling rangers against the troll chieftain and his two heavies. Not surprisingly it didn't end well for the halflings.  The halflings were suffering from bloodlust (the Fantasy Warriors version of frenzy). But it didn't help them.

The Battle

The Chaos right flank

Facing the Chaos were the Halflings including Clive the Wyvern

The Fae right flank ready to advance

Both sides advance

The Forest Spirits face off against the troll warband

Unlike other wargames, large creatures/heroes do not have multiple wounds. Instead they have a saving throw and once you fail the saving throw the creature or hero is removed. This means there is always jeopardy putting these large creatures into battle as they can die on the first turn. Unfortunately for me I couldn't make a saving throw for the entire game and so my large creatures and heroes died! I don't think I have ever managed to roll so many double ones in an entire game.

We decided that we would randomise some of the units for this game and the chaos cultists at the front turned out to be elite. I think this example and the one above give you a good idea of the luck I had on this game.

In the end the halflings were crushed and the Fae couldn't get their best units into combat quickly enough. So the day belonged the Chaos and Undead horde. However, we all managed a good fun game and a return to rolling some dice.

Another Last Mini of the Month

Finishing with a Duel (Again)

My vintage AD&D adventurer characters continues to grow. But I doubt you find these two in the the same party. Lawful good paladin  and chaotic evil fighter.  Bit a last minute rush to finish him by month end. But it is good to finish a few figures by a target even if it is my own benefit.   I expect he will be drawn to the banner of chaos as I need a few more figures to bulk out the Chaos warriors unit.

Both figures are very nicely sculpted and with all of the figures in this range are well kitted out for a life of adventure.

A chance encounter turns violent.

Duel No.7 Encounter in the Wilds

I have attempted to paint the wolf rider before but didn't like the look of the fur so I may strip the paint off and try again. I will however keep on a circular base as I seem to play LotR most.

First 1000 pts - Month 4 (February) - 174 pts

 First 1000 pts - Month 4 (February) - 174 pts

So I finished my 1000 pts challenge at the end of February with my Army Commander (the Mighty Zog Arkwright) and the Drager's Bows (Chaos Thug Archers). A bit of a tale of two halves as I was pleased with the final look of Zog and not particularly pleased with the archers. This was not helped when I decided to stick them onto multi-bases before painting them (doh!) and the Battlemasters figures have quite a low level of detail. And on closer inspection no quivers for their arrows.

However the first stage of this army is now finished and I managed to add a reasonable chaos dwarf allied contingent.

The army in all its glory!

The Last Month (February)

So February was about finishing this army. At some point I must have mixed the points up but I don't think I will go back and work it out as I have painted the figures and now thinking about the next project(s).

Zog is a great figure which oozes character and has lots of nice details. Painting was pretty straightforward with a red colour which makes him stand out from the rest of the warriors.

Nothing good to say bout the thug archers...

Month 4 : Painted Zog (74 pts) and finished off the chaos thug archers (100 pts) which completes the first challenge. Forty three figures painted in just over 4 months.

My Army Commander - Zog

Plus Friends

With a few allies of the short and chaotic kind.  I still need to finish off a few more chaos dwarves to crew all of the guns and have a enough to field a 10-dwarf unit. But I am most of the way there already with this endeavour (with the figures already purchased). My chaos dwarves are a real mixture of Citadel, Ex-Harlequin, converted plastics and some very nicely sculpted Ral Partha miniatures. I have had great fun with Citadel's technical paint on the bronze which is the first time I have used kind of paint.

I also have started the chaos cultists which will allow the current heavy armoured unit (The Doom Reivers) to be upgraded to Marauders. I probably need some cavalry at some point but I quite like the idea of converting some Empire/Bretonian Knights as chaotic turncoats.

Ultimate Oldhammer

Ultimate Oldhammer

Probably the ultimate in Oldhammer collecting, the
80s pre-slotta SS1 Chaos Warrior Uthmog Elvenblade a.k.a. Harry the Hammer (from the 1st edition box).

He has been sitting waiting to be finished and now that I have finished the first 1000pts chaos army, I thought he would be a worthy addition. I decided to a scheme similar to the box art.

In a duel with an 80's skeleton

Finished the base board but then couldn't find any of the photo back drops or much of scatter scenics - Doh! So hopefully some better photos later...

Building a Chaos Dwarf Mortar

Building a Chaos Dwarf Mortar

After building the swivel gun battery, I decided that I also needed some longer-range firepower from my chaos dwarves. The Citadel chaos dwarf mortar always looked a bit too weedy to me. Especially when you compare it to medieval equivalents. So, I wanted something a bit bigger to use with my chaos dwarves.

After looking at a number of alternatives, I settled on barrel using a plastic pencil. This would also give me something to hold onto whilst sculpting the barrel.
A snarling face for the barrel is a must giving it the right fantasy vibe.

Fun with Green Stuff

As usual the details were sculpted with Green Stuff with the teeth made out of small cardboard triangles. The eyes were made previously from Milliput from my Oldhammer shield pile.

The base was done in the similar style to the previous swivel guns with foam card base and card edges. The mortar stand was made from coffee stick stirrers and bolts made from small plastic discs cut from a left over spear.

Don't step on the mushrooms!

The mushroom patches are beginning to grow from a few simple mushrooms to a little patch. Mushrooms made from Green Stuff or Milliput around a paper clip stalk.  Painted with Khorne red and purple with a Nuln Oil wash.  I prefer to do a black spot first before I do the white spot with a bit of the black left showing.

The mortar was painted with Warplock bronze followed by a wash of Nihilakh Oxide and then a dry brush with the bronze again. The stand was painted mid-grey with brown and green washes.  With Riza rust around the bolts. The mortar was glued to the stand and restraining strips added with card and more of the plastic bolts.

The cannon balls are simply made from Milliput.

Ready rain death on everyone

Now I need to get a few proper crew.

 January Progress

So, January was about finishing off what I had in progress. I did paint up Kaleb Daark who originally was going to be used as the army commander but instead I have decided to use the mighty Zog Arkwright. Another great figure from the 90s and has a look more detail than I was expecting.

I really like the rusty brown on the armour, so I have decided to keep that. The shield is well painted (certainly compared to my standard) but he needs a sculpted shield to go in with my other figures so that will have to go.

New Army Commander before repainting.

The Beastman musician only turned up last Thursday, so bit of a rush to get him finished for month end. This completed the Beastman unit – Gor Charge. I also had time to make a movement tray for both the Beastmen and the Chaos Thugs.

Beastman Musician

Month 3: Jan 2021. Completed beastmen champion (63pts) and x3 beastmen (39pts), beastmen musician & standard (52pts), bog troll (65pts) and chaos sorcerer (85pts).

The completed Beastmen Unit

What's Next?

I would also like add some cultists in the form of Disciples of the Red Redemption fame but at the ~£50 for 11 (currently on eBay). I think I might convert some from the Frostgrave cultist’s pack instead. As bit of a side project, I also finished off three swivel guns and teams (see previous post). More chaos dwarves now needed to create a proper allied contingent. I have started work on a mortar and a unit of dwarves to make this a ‘legal’ allied detachment as the chaos dwarf hero can act as an allied contingent commander as long as the contingent is only one race.

What’s left?

New army commander now in progress and I have successfully won the Thug archers so with a bit of planning (luck) I should be able to get the first 1000pts finished this month.

Building Chaos Dwarf Swivel Guns

Building Chaos Dwarf Swivel Guns

The Artificer Swivel Gun battery

Having picked up a couple of chaos dwarf gunners, I decided that I would have a go and make the swivel gun. Having decided to make one swivel gun as a side project.   it seemed a good idea make up a small battery (in this case three).  I could then add some more gunners at a later stage.

After a bit of searching in the loft I found WD108 and rules for the swivel guns. Rules presented below.

I prefer to integrate the gun and the crew into a larger base but being able to remove the dwarves when casualties occur. This gives a bit space to give the base a bit of character.

Mock Up

So, step one make the base and start the gun. I had ago at making one gun first to get the design right. If I were doing these again, I would have made them a bit smaller.

After deciding to make three guns I decides I would need a few more crews and a unit leader. Prices for old chaos dwarves are generally a bit crazy but Ral Partha do some very nice chaos dwarves which fit in very well with the size and style of the old Citadel Chaos dwarves. I’m not a big fan of plain bases and I am going for a chaos wasteland vibe with strange stalagmites, toadstool patches and toxic pools. I edged the bases with card to give a neater finish and allow the bases to be sprayed.

Halfling Conversion to Chaos Dwarf

I was still one short one crew member for swivel gun teams and decided to repurpose one of the halflings I got for Christmas. The spikes on the helmet/shoulder pads are cut down nail points and a little bit of Green Stuff to create a beard /shoes. I was able to create the beard using the end of a cocktail stick. More tools maybe required if I want to do more this sort of conversion. He is bit less stocky than the other chaos dwarves but overall, I am pleased with the effect.

After the Citadel Technical paint is applied

I have just started using some of Citadel’s technical paints and got Nihilakh Oxide (also a Christmas present) gives a very effective Verdigris (bronze corrosion) effect over the top of Warplock Bronze. I have decided to go for corroded / rusted look for the dwarves which represents them working in very toxic environments to make these machineries of destruction.

Two of the finished swivel guns and crews.

The Dark Artificer –Mir Helmdarkson and the beginning of his artillery brigade.

A mixture of old citadel (chaos dwarf and AD&D Duergar - middle front), plus Ral Partha and my converted figure.
