The Rings of Power
I don't normally post about upcoming TV shows. However, this has got be an exception. As a lifelong Tolkien fan, I am definitely looking forward to the new Rings of Power show. It does look like Amazon is really spending the money and making in count in this new trailer.
As a wargamer there are as usual a couple of teasers for various battles and all the major players seem to be represented.

You can really see the John Howe paintings in the last two images. It's too Peter Jackson looking for me to be excited about it, wasn't a big fan (understatement) of the films and had hoped for a different take on Middle Earth. But I guess they gotta go with what the audience wants and I suspect most LotR fans watching now will have had the Jackson debacle as their first experience of Tolkien's world so that's what they will be expecting.
ReplyDeleteI think the Peter Jackson influence is inevitable given the huge financial success and popularity of the films. For me there is a big difference between the Lord of the Rings films and The Hobbit films. I really would have loved to see Guillermo del Toro 's take on The Hobbit. Which would probably have given a very different version.
DeleteWhile not a big Tolkien fan (I know, blasphemy in fantasy gaming) but I think when you get near Peter Jackson.. just run a mile. Remove alot of Tolkien's stuff and add generic 'crowd pleasers' and you get.. a hit film... I only seen a few films based on books or comics or anything which have EVER been a great version.. and they were pretty much all a flop cause the people who read the books, (or comics, or whatever) aren't the same type who would make the film a hit.. Jurassic park did a so-so job.. okay film but SOO much wrong.. Why make Hammon a nice guy? he was the villian of the piece.. the second film was soo godawful...
DeleteAnyway.. Ralph Bakshi did a much more faithful (though not perfect) job, despite some problems with the studios which lead to it being.. unfinished.. and far from a hit film.. Pretty much a good rule of thumb that.. Hit film based on book? not really based on book. Hell, they did a TV series that was meant to be based on the film Westworld and look how crap that is.. nothing to do with westworld at all.. an insult.. but that's a bit off topic..
This series has meant to changed the elements from the books greatly.. so what ever small interest I might have had, is pretty much gone.. little interest in stuff make purely for Money.. so that's why things like Amazon Prime aren't things I'm that interested into..
We too are admirers of Tolkien's world and we learned about it first of all through Jackson's films. Then R read all the books and D listened to the audiobooks of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". We also look forward to September to see what Amazon has achieved: the trailers look intriguing ...
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the comments. Good to hear different points of view.
