Very Early Elf

Ral Partha CS1 Wood Elf with Bow

The minis are getting older! This one is a Ral Partha wood elf who looks smart enough to join the high elves. Originally sculpted by Tom Meier some time in the early nineteen eighties. I reckon I had one of these  back in the eighties but I think it came in a Citadel pack. But then Citadel did produce some Ral Partha minis under license. 

The detail is excellent for a forty year old mini, proving Tom Meier's talent as a sculptor.

Citadel Adventure Pack - C33 Elf Hero

This high elf hero has been drafted in as my army commander.  Work continues on tidying up a selection or broken old high elves to bolster the ranks of the elven Warhost. 

 

 

Having a play with a basic paint shop effects in MS. Not sure I f will stick with this format or the old one.

High Elves are called to Battle

The 'big' unit done and the first army regiment completed in the high elf army. 

The keen eyed amongst you will have recognised the banner. It is a banner drawn by Gary Chalk for the 3rd Citadel compendium*, so seems entirely appropriate for this 80s army. Especially as it is supposed to for Lothern Sea guard. 

*Obviously I didn't cut up my 3rd Citadel compendium, but scanned it instead. 

There is only one duplicate, but I hope rectify this issue with a delivery from eBay!

 

And it is Friday night, so time for a real ale, In this case Adnams Ghost ship IPA.

The Defenders of Kachas Pass

 Wood Elf Captain - Erdolas Thringal

The latest elf painted is who is also C08 high elf but is named as Erdolas Thringal, the wood elf captain at Kachas Pass guard. From Blood bath at Orcs Drift fame. Another very nice mini by Aly Morrison and who will act as the commander of the archer unit in my high elf army.

against the Vile Rune orcs.

Time for a Tidy Up

This is one of the first high elves I painted but I have never been happy with the paint job on the skin. So, while I didn't want to repaint the whole mini. Time did seem right to rework the flesh tones using my current technique. Overall I am much happier with the result. A bit like the company of Thorin, the detail seems quite shallow so needs a stronger contrast to bring out the detail.

A High Elf Call to Arms

Another Army Started by (Almost) Accident

After painting a few more high elves, I realised I was only one elf short of completing a little set (3rd Citadel Compendium). So a quick search of eBay gave me the Guard mini and the set. 

This also set me thinking, like the Undead could I make a 1000pt army list from WFB 3rd. Ed. And like the undead army, the answer was sort of.  While I can make a 1000pts of high elves, it wasn't a particularly inspiring list (but legit) because it had too many heroes and wizards and not enough rank and file. So, I have reworked the list and I still have a few minis to go. 

I don't fancy paying nearly £40 for a bolt thrower so I may have to think about options. As this is a real 80s and 90s army. I don't want to break that vibe.

for my 3rd Citadel Compendium!

A quick group shot to work out what was missing. And just as important how much was there still to paint.

High Elf Left Handed Shields

Finish One Thing Before Starting the Next...

So,  I took the time to finish off the shields and made a third one from greenstuff. Interestingly enough two of the elves are left handed so I had to also make the shields left handed. As there is a ridge on one side which is fine for right handed minis but looks odd the other way round.

More Classic C08 High Elves

 Like Buses

As is often the case, painting one mini inspires me to paint some more. So, another three high elves got painted in rapid succession. The only issue, I need some more shields. I am using these odd shields in a nod to Aly Morrison's original high elves which used these shields. 

Still a few more to do, including the captain of elves in first scenario of Blood Bath at Orcs Drift.
