Goblins (& Pixies) to Your Mounts

Let the Jousting Begin

So, the goblins (Nath) won 3-1 and won extra spikes as a trophy. The pixies (me) were robbed!

Team coaches can be seen in the background.

The two jousting teams are a real mix of manufacturers with Oakbound pixie team coming out tops. I struggled to find enough minis to make two convincing teams. So, in the end I used Oakbound (very pleased with the look of the pixie team), Ral Partha Europe, Bad Squiddo, Warbases, classic Citadel and Wargames Atlantic. I would like to improve the goblin team but that can come later once we have played a few games.

And I have an idea for a Halloween themed team.

The Pixies ready for the off

So, one game in on Wartnose Goblin Jousting, it was a lot of fun. The rules were easy to pick up but had enough quirks from other rules to make them different from other games. And the randomised movement templates actually fitted the game very well.

Once we had read the rules correctly, combat sped up nicely (we didn’t read the rules on double and triples right on the first read through). The only question point we had about the rules was if the Dirty Tricks rules were dirty enough. We wanted an occasional more dramatic effect such as unseating a rider. But that could be just us!

Last of the Jousters

Spider Charioteer

Wasn't happy with the dinosaur and couldn't find a spider of the right size. So, ended up making a chariot for the spiders. Just a bit of painting and jousters will soon be ready.

Away again with work but still time to sample the local stuff.

Two Jousting Teams Take Shape

Ok, Not all Goblins for Wartnose Goblin Jousting

So, I have worked out the first two teams for jousting. I just need to get them finished! Definitely a bit re-use and repurposing. If I manage to get a decent run of games then I can always get a few more minis! 😆

Badger, Fox & Giant Stag Beetle

The First Wartnose Goblin Jousting Team

First two jousters - To be named

After looking around various minis (painted & unpainted), I realised that the badger pixie riders (from Oakbound) would make the perfect team*. Ok so technically not goblins but close enough and make an interesting looking team. As I wanted to make each rider different, I found some different steeds from the bits box (Warbases & Ral Partha Europe). So, voila a Wartnose  jousting team. Now, I need find some actual goblins for them to go up against...

Point to Note - Now I did realise that I bought the 50mm bases (should have been 60mm) but I don't think that will stop the fun.

*And two are already painted! Plus was a great opportunity to use this colour shift paint on the stag beetle.

The Battle of the Five Armies at Colours

 Midgard Rules

The excellent game of Battle of the Five Armies using the Midgard rules (by https://mogsymakes.net/blog/) and using Iron Mitten's minis* (https://iron-mitten.blogspot.com/).

*And most likely some from Mogsymakes!

More Scrap Dreads & Show Booty

 Fun Times at Colours

Work continues on two scrapheap ork dreadnoughts and I may build a third one as I have enough parts. But I probably should finish the first two...

I managed to get to Colours at Newbury races today and picked up a few things. Like last year there were some bargains to be had - a copy of War of the Ring for a tenner on the B&B and twelve dwarf miners for £12 from Black Tree designs. They were billed as retirement stock so this might the last chance to get them. I would still like to take another go at Blood Bath at Orcs Drift. And these miners have a nice Oldhammer vibe.

More pictures to follow of the tremendous Battle of the Five Armies and my go at 'Here's the Ruckus'.

The other thing that caught my eye but didn't buy (Doh!) was Hairfoot Jousting which only needs six minis to play. Fortunately, a friend of my has a copy, so I will have a go at putting together a team or two.

Back to the Dread Mob

Time for Another Scrapheap Challenge

After putting together an ork mega-attack dreadnought last year, I decided he needed a bit of company. So, I have started on at least one more smaller dreadnought. As before, the is aim to make these dreadnought(s) using only bits 'found' from around the house or existing gaming stuff.

Taking inspiration from the original ork dreadnought, I thought it would be fun to add a goblin 'pilot' sticking out the top.

Itzcoatl and Raiders of the Lost Tomb

Pre-Battle

After recovering from the shock of the unexpected underground melee, Itzcoatl had retired back to the relative safety of the camp. The goblins had not pursued the Slann past the entrance or ventured out the following night. But Itzcoatl needed the instructions on the wall of the temple in order to find the lost artifact his master had commanded he recover.

So, he had decided to muster nearly all of his company to venture forth back into the temple complex. The marsh tribe Slann had found another deserted entrance and through this would go the majority of the force, led by the reliable Bull Slann commander Potzalcol.  Whilst he, Lyta and escort an attempted to return to the inscription in the pond chamber.

Objectives & Rules

Lyta must reach the inscription and every turn, if not in combat may attempt to decipher it. In order to secure the temple, the four entrances must be sealed. When either of these two objectives is reached then the game is over.

Lyta may finish her translation on a roll of 5+, the entrances are sealed by a Slann reaching entrance point and not being in combat. They effectively block the entrance with debris surrounding the entrance.

The goblin reinforcements will be randomly generated at each of the entry points (D6-3)per turn.

The Battle

The sortie started with Itzcoatl sending in his most expendable troops – the giant frogs and slaves into the temple.

With two goblin entry points near to the Slann starting point, Itzcoatl’s group had a battle right from the start and the slaves struggled to make any progress entering the temple. And Itzcoatl had ‘forgotten’ to use any of his spells, so it wasn’t until that Potzalcol led a party from the other side that any real progress was made. As for every one goblin taken out of the fight, another appeared.

At the other entrance the Slann had better luck, the goblins started further away and didn’t manage to roll as many reinforcements. Giving the Slann a chance to advance and block the goblin's exit from the ladder room.

With the goblins from the ladder room blocked, the Slann were able to enter deeper into the temple and block the farthest entrance point and then come round to attack the goblins nearest Itzcoatl from the rear.

ii-Phon and Potzalcol  were then able to use their superior fighting skills to push the goblins back to the second entrance point and block that from use. Lyta then saw a moment (by using Might) to block the third entry point before the goblins could reinforce it.  The remaining goblins retreated to the ladder room and battle was called to a halt.

Obviously didn't end up at my starting objectives but the game had reached it natural conclusion with three of the four entry points blocked. And no real way for the goblins or Slann to finish the game without a very slow fight to get to the ladder room.

After the Battle

Tol-Tec continued to have a great game and took down a further two goblins and as a result gained poisoned blades on the hero chart as well a point of Fate. While Potzalcol gains a point of Defence, ii-Phon gains Steady Aim and Lyta gains a point to her Attack.
